Held at the All England Club in the disctrict of Wimbledon, London since 1877, Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.

The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June/early July, ending with the women's and men's singles finals, which take place on the second Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Men's champions Pete Sampras and Roger Federer hold the record for the biggest number of wins in the open era (before 1968) with 7 titles each. Martina Navratilova holds the record in the women's event with 9 wins in total between 1978 and 1990.
